In 1977, Doris Sloan began leading seniors in UC Berkeley’s then-new Environmental Science major in a one-semester research seminar. Students chose topics, often based on current news, and generated reports that met professional standards. These were published in volumes still in the school’s library.
In 1983, the already longstanding problems of blocked pipes and poor circulation in Aquatic Park led to several reports. In 1989, discussion of how to reduce freeway noise had begun. Years of debate and planning over this ultimately came to nothing.
